Karura Kanyungu Community Development Initiative (KKCDI)
    (Unverified non-profit organisation)

James Peter Kamau says: Karura Kanyungu Community Development Initiative is a CBO wishing to transform and model Karura Kanyungu, a rural Village, in Karura Sub location, Kabete division, Kikuyu District in Kiambu County, Central Kenya; into a self reliant and fully developed rural town. We have developed a structured way to develop Karura Kanyungu Village by provision of security, education, water, economic empowerment, environment and youth mobilization to generally uplift the welfare standards of the residents.

We have further identified that the economic empowerment of the vulnerable members of our community is a key to development. We therefore hope to do some Economic Empowerment Programmes which include a School Bags Making Factory using flexes for the youth, an Information Technology Centre (ICT) to bring internet services nearer the people; and a Low Cost Bricks Making Factory for the women. These projects once complete will be housed in a former Nursery School which has been renamed the Karura Kanyungu Business Centre.

The requisite administrative issues have been finalized and the plot allocated to the community by the Kikuyu Town Council. Works are going on to renovate the Centre, supply 3-phase power, and fencing. Funds are being sourced to buy the necessary equipment.

    i) School Bags Making Project
The pilot phase of the project has already benefited the local Karura Kanyungu Primary School where the first batch of 500 school bags has been donated. The bags were made from hired premises with hired staff. Once these avoidable costs are foregone, the project will be truly sustainable and self reliant. Further productions will be produced and marketed by the community youth in local schools at a fairly competitive price.

    ii) ICT Centre
Access to information has been considered vital for business survival and in the era of e-commerce this has become more important to set up a communication centre cum documentation centre to help home based office businesses access vital services at the most reasonable cost. We propose to network about 15 computers with fast internet services at our local Global Village Centre which we believe will be an attractive centre for short term computer services, lessons as well as communication.

iii) Low Cost Bricks Making Project
With security, water, educated people, and empowered youth around, it is anticipated that the land available at Karura will be used to put up low cost rental flats and therefore there will be inevitable demand in and around the village for new building technology. Following a survey sourced through the Ministry of Housing, we are aware of the investment opportunities which we hope to give the women of Karura Kanyungu through capacity building them and linking them to the market. A local women group which owns a prime idle piece of land at the shopping centre will be assisted to acquire an industrial modern hydra foam low cost brick making machine which will be used to empower women by starting an income generating activity.

Using this project we hope to organize women into Community Work Groups with capacity to start Enterprise Development Plans capable of accessing Government funds as well as commercial funds to develop.
With the above insight, I believe your organization is best placed to assist us with technical as well as management staff to help us reach our goals and achieve our vision.

Kindly let us know how we can partner.
We can be reached on email at
    karurakanyungucommunity@gmail.com or jampetkam@yahoo.com
